After the release of Elden Ring Runes last month, players discovered that the most recent FromSoftware game shares more than just surface-level similarities with it's Souls predecessors. The notorious Dark Souls bug can still be found in the recesses of Elden Ring's game's code and it could also provide some exciting new opportunities for those who enjoy speedrunning.
The first instance I could discover of the glitch, referred to by the "deathcam" glitch--occurring during the game Elden Ring comes from a video released on the date of the game's release on February 25. One speedrunner named Ginz realized that falling off a certain cliff makes the game believe that you've fallen to your death , without being able to touch the "kill plane" it's an unnoticed part of terrain which kills you.
Elden Ring's camera goes into deathcam mode. It is facing down at the victim to better capture their falling into whatever hole, pit or cliff is believed to be dangerous. However, as you can see on the screen above Ginz is still able to move around , and may have even returned to the ground thanks to the spectral steed Torrent's double leap if they hadn't accidentally fallen once more.
The deathcam glitch was found in several previous Souls games, including Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3, but it's most well-known in the first Dark Souls, where it is utilized to the game's break-in to Sen's Fortress. In the game, the bug is activated by putting an enemy in a way that ripping them off briefly makes you go out of bounds and triggers the deathcam. And since certain objects don't load when the glitch is the game, you can walk right into Sen's Fortress even when its gate is down.
Since Ginz has discovered the buy Elden Ring Items deathcam bug nearly two weeks ago, players have found numerous areas to use the glitch, some significantly more efficient than others.Elden Ring's speedrun methods are currently focusing on having fun rather than exploiting a handful of bugs. However, I'm sure there's more than one player who is seeking ways to avoid bosses and possibly even entire zones using the brand new game's deathcam. It's only a matter of the time before people open Elden Ring's vast world open and I'm eager to see how quickly they do it.
